Music is a vital component in our day to day lives. It is often said that music is the medicine for the soul. We know that the soul of mankind is fragile and is often hurt by things that we encounter in our day to day lives. To help restore our souls to their proper healthy conditions, we often turn to music. Music is a great psychological remedy for our ailing souls.
Music can be described as any pleasant sound to the ear. Music is often considered as any rhythmic sounds that are produced using musical instruments or made by singing. However, music can also be made in many other places. For example, music is very present in the natural world. The melodious singing of birds or the unique sounds made by different wild animals are all musical sounds. The tapping of rain as it falls on the roof or as it falls on leaves, the rush of wind among leaves and branches on the trees, or the sound of thunder.
Other day to day sounds can also be used to make music. The sounds on a busy highway are a good example. There is the cacophony of different car horns, the sound of different engines, the screech of tires, and the sound of mechanical vehicle parts creaking under strain. The city is also a great source of musical sounds, from the sounds of different human voices, the sound of feet walking on a paved sidewalk, or the occasional bark of a dog.
Mankind discovered many years ago that he could create music by using some of the natural things that he came across. Some of the first musical instruments included the blow horn, the jingles, a drum, and reeds. As man’s knowledge became more advanced and he was able to use tools to better his artistic skills, he was able to develop more advanced musical instruments that could produce better music.
As he advanced, man was able to make stringed musical instruments which were made by having tightly strung chords that could be strummed to produce sound. Chords of different thickness could be used to produce sounds of different pitch. Man was also able to make more advanced wind instruments including the trumpets and the flutes. The organ was one of the greatest achievements of man.
As man’s technological advancement increased, man discovered electricity. The discovery of electricity brought about a great revolution in man’s inventions.
In his bid to explore all the ways by which this new form of energy could be used, man eventually found a way of using electricity to come up with musical instruments. With electric power, man was able to come up with the electric piano which later was developed to the more advanced keyboard. Other musical instruments were also enhanced such as the electric guitar.
Another major input into the development of music was the discovery of electric amplification. People could now sing for large audiences through electric mic amplifiers. Musical instruments could also have their sounds greatly amplified by use of amplifiers.
