Singapore is a major destination for international students all over the world who want to study numerous courses. The quality of education is a major lure for the students. Students are also attracted by the high probability of getting a lucrative job in Singapore after completion of their education.
Despite the many advantages that might attract students to Singapore, there are also some setbacks of studying in Singapore. One of the biggest challenge for students is the high cost of living in the small island state. Singapore is one of the most expensive cities to live in. For example, ownership of a car is extremely expensive, getting the car itself is not so expensive but the regulation costs can be more than triple the cost of buying the car.
One of the biggest challenge faced by students as a result of the high cost of living in the city is the high costs of real estate; especially for the foreigner. Many of the citizens of Singapore do not have such a hard time paying for their house rents and mortgage. The government has numerous quality housing structures that it provides for the Singaporeans at much reduced costs. These units are known as HDB flats.
These HDB residential homes are however strictly made for the natives alone. Foreigners have to go through challenging protocol before they can be able to rent some living space in Singapore.
Many Singaporeans however have provided a great solution for people such as students and expatriates who need some residence for a given period of time. HDB home owners often opt to rent out extra rooms in their houses. This is a great way of earning some extra money to help in their daily needs and to also pay for the rent of the apartment.
Singaporeans rent out common rooms and some rent out their master rooms. This often happens with elderly parents whose children have left home and have left vacant rooms or it might happen when the local families have members who will be away for a period of time, such as their own students going off to study. Some people might also decide to create a free room by squeezing into the other rooms, e.g. siblings can share a room instead of each sibling having their own room.
Master rooms are units that have a bathroom attached. This is a great advantage for any person using the master room. In a master room, one can live completely separate from the other people in the house and the only thing they might have to share is a kitchen and the exit door. Master rooms are usually pricier than common rooms due to the extra amenities.
Common rooms do not have the privilege of an attached bathroom. They are therefore less costly to rent.
Students find master rooms and common rooms very convenient for them. Two or more students can even rent and share a common room or a master room. Sharing a room with other students will help ease the cost burden even further.
